Graham and Amy Visit - March 2020

Capturing the essence of the visit - dinner at Elske
We had our last visitors for a while due to Coranovirus - Graham and Amy flew into Chicago for St Patrick's Day weekend.  We originally had planned on various activities but since all events and tours were canceled and all museums closed, we resorted to lots of eating and drinking.  Graham called it his food inspiration tour!

Amy flew in on Thursday and stayed with a friend and then joined us on Friday.  Graham flew in on Friday and took the train where Keith met him at one of the stops and then came to the house.  After giving them the tour and letting them get settled, we began the food extravaganza - we went to dinner at Smyth, partaking in the Omaha tasting (which included 20 courses) and the wine pairing.  The restaurant is nice and the food was quite good - although some courses were better than others.

After dinner, we stopped at Lottie's for one beer - well at least most of us - Graham pretended to drink his but really got rid of it in the bathroom!

On Saturday, we slept in and then continued the tour de food.  Our first stop was to see the new Starbucks Reserve Roastery on Michigan Avenue.  The store has five floors and includes a shop, restaurant and bar.  Very cool digs.

We then went to the Purple Pig where we shared several dishes that were all very tasty - ricotta gnocchi, pork tongue, meatballs, artichokes and pate.  While the food was good, we did not like the location - in a lobby of a high rise.  Continuing on Graham's memory tour of favorite places, we stopped at Bandera for cornbread which was quite good.

We then had to walk off some calories so we walked along the river over to West Loop where we went to Time Out Market to show Graham the new spot (we didn't eat anything here).  We tried to then get into Au Cheval to try the famous burger but the wait was too long so instead we had ice cream at Jeni's Ice Cream - yum!

Back at home, we took a nap and then showered to head out for more food! For dinner, we went to Elske which is a very cute restaurant in West Loop (very near Smyth).  We did not do the tasting menu but instead ordered a la carte and we shared several dishes that were all very yummy - bread, hamachi, risotto, chicken, wagyu flat iron and all four desserts!

We were stuffed....well, so we thought because we then went to Cabra for a night cap and ended up ordering two tasty appetizers - snapper ceviche and goat empanadas.

On Sunday, we chilled in the morning and then headed out for the final food extravaganza.  We went to Tzuco for lunch where we had some very flavorful Mexican dishes - duck waffles, chilaquiles, papadzule crepe, pork pabil (our favorite of them all) and chile rellenos.

Of course, we needed dessert so we went to Bang Bang Pie in Logan Square and shared the berry, honey, lemon and chocolate turtle pies - so good.  We then drove Amy to the airport and on the way back, we walked around Pilsen to see the colorful murals.

Back at the house, we relaxed a bit and then Graham packed up for us to take him to the airport.  We had to stop once more for food to try the fondue at Quartino that he could not stop talking about.  The restaurant serves Italian food and is located in Streeterville.  We tried the fondue, bacon wrapped dates and white bean dip.  The fondue is Italian style so not what we expected.  While we didn't like it near as much as Graham, Graham was quite happy to have had it again and even better, he scored the recipe from the waitress.  We then drove Graham to the airport and vowed not to eat for at last three days!

Santa Fe with NC Crew - March 2020

Gang at Petroglyph National Monument
For JoAnna and Keith Artin's 50th birthdays, we went to Santa Fe for a week with the Keith/Kate, Kim/Jonathan, and John/JoAnna.  We had originally planned on Norway but we could not get a week that worked for all in the Summer.  So the trip formally known as Norway was instead a fantastic week in sunny Santa Fe where we explored parks, museums and lots of yummy restaurants!

Bandolier National Monument

Accommodations:
We rented an AirBnB that was about a 20 minute walk from downtown.  The place was great - the main house had two bedrooms, 1.5 baths, living room and kitchen/dining room and the casita had two bedrooms and a bathroom.

Activities:
We all arrived into Santa Fe on Saturday with the two of us arriving in Albuquerque on the same flight as Kim and Jonathan so we shared a ride into Santa Fe together.  The four of us grabbed lunch and groceries before picking up the rest of the gang at the Santa Fe airport.  Each morning we ate breakfast at the house and then ventured out for the day.  While there, we did the following activities:

  • Basketball - we watched a few Duke, UNC and UVA games.
  • Escape Room - we had an hour to solve multiple puzzles and ended up getting on of the highest scores (3400) according to the person working at the front desk!
Escape Room
  • International Folk Art Museum - lots of interesting displays of folk art from around the world.  There was also an exhibit on Japanese horror characters.

  • Santa Fe Downtown - Walked around and went into some of the shops around the square.
  • Bandolier National Monument - Located about an hour outside of Santa Fe.  Great park with dwellings representing native life.  We hiked about two miles to see the different dwellings.  One area required climbing up ladders which was a bit difficult for those of us who do not like heights but also well worth doing!
Bandolier National Monument
  • Los Alamos - Walked around the town to see some of the sights.  Town is not very cute.  A few stayed behind to go to the Science Museum which has a great exhibit of the Manhattan Project but since Keith and Shawna had done it already, we headed back to the house.
  • Petroglyph National Monument - located near Albuquerque.  Each of the sites require driving in order to get to them.  We hiked Rinconada and Piedras Marcadas Canyons - each had quite a lot of interesting petroglyphs which we decided were older versions of graffiti!
  • Meow Wolf - an immersive, colorful art display that tells a story of a family that disappeared due to paranormal activity.  You walk through multiple rooms to solve puzzles to figure out what happened to the family.
Meow Wolf
  • Street Eats Food Walking Tour - had a great time tasting yummy food at the following places:
    • El Molero - street cart on the square.  Had the tasty green chile tamales.
    • Santarepa Cafe - cute cafe with Venezuelan food.  Tried the arepas and cachapa (sweet corn pancake with cheese).
    • Fiesta Oaxaca - tried the mole and mushroom quesadilla - food was OK.
    • Dumpling Tea - took a break from Mexican and had multiple kinds of dumplings - all very good.
    • La Lecheria - very good ice cream - tried the sea salt chocolate and green chile.
Yummy food on food tour
  • Ten Thousand Waves - very cool Japanese style spa located about 15 minutes outside of town.  Did a three hour treatment which included an hour in a private hot tub, massage, neck and head massage and salt scrub.  We both really enjoyed the treatments.

  • Historic Walking Tour - learned about the history and local tribes and went inside a few of the churches, including the Loredo Chapel.  Very informative tour.

Noisy Water Winery - tasting room located downtown.  We stopped to do a wine tasting.  They have a lot of different types of wine - none of them great.  Although Kate liked some of their reds and some of the crew liked their green chile wine.
