Vail - March 2013

Cheryl, Keith, and Shawna at the Oar House
Cheryl came to visit and to ski so we headed out to Vail for the weekend.

Accommodation
Lodge at Vail - Cheryl found a deal on Expedia for half off so she booked a room with two beds. However, when we arrived there were no more rooms with two beds. They upgraded us to a junior suite with a sofa bed but when we looked at it, it was more like a big chair with a very skinny mattress. So we asked at the desk if they would also give us a second room which they did as long as we paid the cleaning fee. We negotiated free parking and breakfast which more than offset the cleaning fee so it all worked out in our favor.

ActivitiesWe picked up Cheryl at the airport around 3pm on Friday and then drove out to the mountains. After we checked in, we went to Elway's bar for drinks and watched the end of the UNC game (they lost!). We then went to dinner.

On Saturday, Keith and Cheryl skied while Shawna worked out and went to the spa. It snowed most of the day so was pretty cold and poor visibility, but the snow was fantastic. After skiing, we met up for a beer at the Red Lion and then napped before dinner.

On Sunday, Keith and Cheryl skied again while Shawna worked out, read and walked around the village. We met for a drink and snack and them drove home. Surprisingly the traffic was not bad so we got home in good time. That evening we watched the Duke at a local restaurant in the neighborhood (we won - sweet 16 here we come!).

RestaurantsElways - we had drinks here and a couple of appetizers - tacos and grilled artichoke.

Mountain Standard - the sister restaurant to Sweet Basil. The food was great and the atmosphere even better - pretty casual. We shared a salad and pancetta polenta entree and them a bread pudding for dessert.
Red Lion - wouldn't be a ski weekend without stopping by for a beer. As usual, it was packed.

Kelly Liken - had dinner here. It was a prix fix menu. Shawna got fish carpaccio, pumpkin ravioli and lamb loin. Keith got the grilled radicchio salad and the filet. It was yummy.

Ore House - we stopped by for a drink and snacks after a hard day skiing - shared the beef tips, Mac, and fries.

The Tavern - in the hood. We went to dinner here and watched the Duke game. We shared the salmon salad and fish tacos.
